Mysterious Teaching

Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

What a surprise!

Today I handed them the book and told them to take their own notes and you should have seen the looks on their faces.  I have been leading them up to this moment all year.  Slowly, oh so slowly I have been showing them how to pick out the important items in a chapter to take note on.  Did they pay attention?  NOOOOOOooooo!  They just copied what I told them to and didn't even bother to read it.  One time, I wrote the test word for word on the board and they copied is and I told them this was the test and go study it.  Two students passed.  How in the h--- can an entire class of 43 students flunk a test when I gave them a copy of it to study from?  Weeeelll, they didn't bother to spend the time copying it.  " I thought it was just notes."  OF COURSE IT WAS JUST NOTES!!!  What am I wasting my time on?  Today, they can get their own notes.
