Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

Kids need more sleep!

Holy cow!  Don't parents send their kids to bed anymore?  My neighborhood is flooded with little kids and big kids who should already be in bed.  We have school tomorrow!  But, they are playing, riding bikes, and running up and down the streets like they own them.  Where are the parents?  All the new research shows that Americans are not getting enough sleep, especially children.

I know this is a fact.  They can barely stay awake in my classroom.  I have to wake them up and it is embarassing for them.  I wrote notes home to remind the parents that they need to go to bed earlier but I got no response.  Of course it isn't my business what time they go to bed but it is my business if they sleep in class.

I don't want to take over the parent's job but I do want the kids to get enough sleep.  How can they learn or function if they don't have enough sleep?  They can't.  And from the looks of their work, I would say they really need more sleep.  Is it wrong for a teacher to write notes home reminding parents that they aren't doing their job?
