Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

I am officially OLD!!

I have an appointment on Friday to get my new Hearing Aid.  Yes, You heard right, I can't hear out of my left ear and I am getting a hearing aid.

I have had problems for years.  I thought it was my allergies plugging up my ears.  But, when I finally went to my ENT to see if he could clear up the problem, it was actually a freezing of the bones in my left ear and I needed a real live hearing aid.  I can't quite get around the words yet.  Anyway, I am getting one that really isn't seen.  It is very small and won't affect me wearing my glasses. It also is supposed to keep background noises down.

Boy, turning 55 was a real blow to my ego.  That was the day they told me I needed it.  I think it has been all the blowing of whistles in my teaching career.  Our school has never yet had a bell system that works like it should.  So, the head teacher on duty (me) usually has to blow the whistle to call the kids in.  I actually got a whistle that isn't as loud and harsh on the ears a few years ago.  However, it was already too late for poor old lefty.

Besides having all the old age problems, hot flashes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc, now I have to have a hearing aid.  Man, when they tell you getting old isn't for the faint at heart, they really mean it.

My students aren't looking forward to it.  They love to whisper and they think they won't be able to when I get it.  Actually, I can still hear them with my right ear and as long as they are working, it doesn't matter to me.

I guess I will just have to grow into this old age thing slowly.

The whispering thing is funny.  My students do the same thing.  They also whisper in Spanish, assuming I can't understand the language.  It wasn't until Parent-Teacher Conferences, when I started speaking in Spanish, that they figured it out.
