Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

Hearing update

You all probably wonder what I am doing writing all these blogs in a row.  Well, I am at my second Wednesday of Parent Teacher conferences.  I have time on my hands!

So, the hearing aid...It is fantastic.  In fact it works so well, that I realized how loud my class was.  I had to crack down.  They didn't get it, so I mandated a "Quiet Day".

What is Quiet Day you ask?  Well, I am more that happy to tell you.

Quiet Day is a day when the students are not allowed to talk in class at all.  They have to write everything down and raise their hand for me to come to them.  I have to write an answer.  If all goes well, then I mandate a "Mail Recess" where they can spend 15 minutes writing and delivering notes to their friends, but NO talking.  Then the friend writes back.  When the timer goes off, everyone sits back down and continues to work.

How did it go?  FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC!!!  They were so good that when I instituted the new reading groups rotation today, it went so well, that I almost forgot to go to lunch. (we go early on half days)

The kids?  They loved it and asked to do it again.  They thought it was great fun.  They also got a lot of work done.  At the end of the time (this is our half day) I talked to them about the importance of being quiet in the classroom.  I took off my hearing aide and showed it to them and explained when they got really loud, it would whistle a real high pitch that didn't hurt but was annoying.  If they learned to control the noise, we could do a lot more fun activities in class.

So, we all had a great day.  The only bad part was when one of the kids pulled the fire alarm during parent conferences and we all had to go stand out in the sun for 30 minutes until they got it checked out and turned off the alarm.
