We call it Pumpkin Night. I don't know why we don't just call it what it is... a Halloween Celebration. I don't understand why we have to change our culture to assimilate others into it. Why can't they just accept that this is a cultural celebration (no longer religious) and let it go? They object that Halloween is for Witches. Do you see any witches flying across the sky? I don't. Yes, I know there are people who call themselves Witches and Wicca and etc. But, they don't do real magic, they don't fly on brooms, they don't wave magic wands and have real sparks come out. It is a belief system. Not mine, but still a belief system. Halloween is a fun fantasy time for kids, and now adults, to celebrate out of their comfort zone. They can dress up and look and act like the donkey's butt they always wished they could be.
I love to celebrate it at school. I love to see the costumes the kids come up with. My favorite are the home-made ones with real creative input. I always made my kids costumes. Back then, Halloween was so cold, we had to cover their costumes with coats. Not no more! Today is a record breaking 97 again. If I don't fry my brains out waiting for the cool weather to come, I may just have a great Halloween, Christmas and rest of the school year.
