Mysterious Teaching

Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

Did you ever have the feeling of being watched?

I have a WONDERFUL   boy in my class who loves nothing more that to disrupt my class.  He screams and shouts at me and the students and cries and throws temper tantrums.  I have learned to ignore him as best I can watching for his safety.  Today, when he couldn't get a response out of me, he decided to move to where I could look square at him so he could glare at me.  I turned my back and continued working.  He started screaming at me that he was going to get a gun and shoot everyone.  I quietly stood up and took his sweatshirt in my fist and drug his little butt down to the principals office screaming and disturbing classes the whole way.  (He was doing the screaming.)  I told the principal that I wouldn't even have brought him except that he threatened to shoot me.  I don't take threats like that lightly anymore.

He does NO work for me so I made a behavior chart for work and told him for every assignment he does, I will give him a sticker.  5 assignments and he will get a reward.  He tore it off his desk.  He said he didn't want to do any work.  Now, this had nothing to do with his attitude.  I just wanted him to do some work for me.  It didn't work.

You know, this world is full of Crazies and they have to go to school somewhere.  I guess we are the desiginated Crazy School.  We seem to have an abundance of them here.  My little crazy will be placed in an ED classroom next week.  My principal tried to have the meeting today but Mom couldn't make it today.  I can't wait to meet Mom.  I want to know if the apple is close to the tree.  I wonder if dad will come too?

If the mom is anything like the moms at our school, there will always be a reason why she can't make it.  We also are one of those schools that takes the kids other schools kick out. We're known as the school that takes anyone.  It's a shame, but like you said, they have to go somewhere!!

Last year I told my 4th grader who exhibited similar behavior that for every 5 papers he turned in I would give him a Yugio (sp?) card.  This was after I found that this was something he really wanted.  It did work.  He was really into it and was turning in papers left and right.  Of course, they had to be done neatly and atleast 80% accurate.  However, this year I have a student who I swear has multiple personalities.  He will be totally hot--getting his work done one minute and then get discouraged the next and throw his books on the floor, disrupt class and end up out of the room.  Parents are no help.  Our school is extreme low income and going through some transitions.  We are getting a student study team going next month.  There is talk of a behavior plan. Has anyone had any experience with Student Study Teams or behavior plans?  This is only my second year teaching.

I have.  I will never be on one again.  I don't know about other schools, but I referred a student last year in September and he was tested in May because I finally made a stink.  It is supposed to take 6 weeks but it doesn't.  I don'tknow if I will ever refer a student again.
