Mysterious Teaching

Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

My team has run amok!

They have left me in the dust.  They have tattled to the principal about every little thing I have ever done.  They are on the war path.  At least 2 of them are.  One of them of course is Monkey Poop.  She just cannot let the experienced person be the team leader.  She is right and I am wrong.

Yesterday, my class complained that they were always the last 4th grade class to go to lunch.  I asked the duty people and they said I pretty much sent my kids last most of the time.  Which means, I sent my class when they were supposed to go.  Sooooooo...since my class was being really good, I walked them down to the cafeteria 2 minutes early.  I expected them to be there before me.  They weren't.  My class got to go first!  We loved it.  So, I am eating my lunch in my room and in walks 2 of my team members. (Yes, MP!)  They wanted to talk to me.  They didn't like the way I took my class to lunch so early because it distracted their classes and they lost teaching time. (They couldn't close their doors?)   We're talking 2 minutes here.  I explained that my class said they never got to go first and they called me a liar.  So, I said, I guess I made a mistake. and I smiled at them.  They said Yes I did.  I didn't say anything after that.  so they left.

I was totally ticked off.  I was supposed to have a meeting with the principal after school anyway so I told her what happened.  She was appalled at the whole thing.  She suggested I go to lunch FIVE minutes early today and see what happened.  Heh, heh.  I did.  One of those teacher's kids all came in (before our actual lunch time) and one told me that we were at lunch too early.  I said it was OK.  I was staying with my class and talking about manners until it was time to go through the line. Their teacher didn't even bother to see if anyone was on duty. (There wasn't yet)

Where does this childishness come from?  I have never pushed my kids to be the first.  I have never been upset because Mrs. H stops my class so her class can come out of the room in front of mine.  I have just kept my mouth shut.  (Except here of course.  This is where I complain)  I don't understand this.  They both take their kids out to recess every single day.  4th grade is not suppose to have recess because of the minutes we are suppose to spend on reading and math.  Yet they do it anyway and then complain about not having enough time to do Science or Social Studies.  I just don't get it at all.

Monkey Poop has been absent almost 30 days this year.  I can't imagine why her kids are so poorly behaved.  They have absolutely no consistancy.  It isn't like we can get the same sub each time you know.

Oh, well, I won't be working with them next year anyway.

I taught with a couple of ladies similar to MP.  It was amazing to see adults act like that.  It's so unprofessional.  One teacher loved to always be the star of the show and would start talking really loud when the principal was in the area.  It was an open pod with four classes separated by movable walls.  Even if the principal was evaluating another teacher, she made sure her voice was louder than anyone elses.  There were times when I would just give up and let my kids work independently because I couldn't talk over her.

One of the most common problems I see tearing down teacher strengths is "trianguling," that is, targeting a teacher and then nothing she does is right.  As a result the teacher wastes more and more energy.

Sounds like you're working at it.  I write on psychology issues in schools at

sounds like there is some childishness on the part of the principal too.  Instead of being passive aggressive, why don't you solve the problem?!?  you go at 'x' time... teacher 2 goes at 'y' time, etc.... instead of it being a race. the times could be 2 minutes apart... imagine that!

Wow, you're a lot nicer than I - I would have "gotten in that teacher's face" for calling me a liar.  But, I generally find that bullies back off when you stand your ground.  Go for it - they are never going to act their age, so you might as well have the fun of seeing them go "gonzo".

Your principal always seems to agree with you - why doesn't he pull the offenders into his office and lay down the law (stupid question - most administrators won't do their job)?

I'm afraid that's the reason I won't do middle school again - I loved the kids, but I couldn't stand working with all the catty, gossiping and childish women.
