Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

Field Day? I'm not coming to school...

"Field Day?  I'm not coming to school.  In fact, my Mom is going to call me in sick so I don't have to go."

That is exactly what happened in my class yesterday.  The student is a plump little slug.  She refuses to run in PE. but she runs ar recess.   She refuses to do anything physical except on her own terms.  Her Mother always calls school and give "excuses" about why she can't do this or that.  It drives me crazy.  I am over weight and I am old and have a bad knee and I do more than she does.

Why do parents skip out on being parents?  We had a blast yesterday.  The games were imaginative and hysterical.   My class had a really good time.  I just don't understand why parents allow their children to skip activities like that.

I figured you were calling in sick because that is what the debate is every year on our campus....over which teachers will show up or not.  This year should be good.  Our music teacher and counselor have taken over and it is on the last day of school for 3 hours only.  OH and today we found out of PE teacher is not even coming to field day.  I might actually feel well enough to enjoy this one and attend :)

We have field day coming up and I understand exactly what you are going through. I love field day, MOST of the teachers do and MOST of the students do.  In fact, ours is an all day event this year.  I bet if you told this family and "plump little slug" that there is a free Nintendo Wii and games a mile down the road, they would run as fast as they possible could to get there and things would be fine.

Maybe next year for field day you can have french fries, chips, cookies, couches, movies, and air conditioning!
