Mysterious Teaching

Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

One week and counting to August 1st.

If course I will be back on Monday, but that is because they were supposed to add cabinets to our rooms and I will have to unpack a lot of junk.

Meanwhile I am busy making word cards and letter cards and sound cards...  Cards! Cards! Cards!  I could just copy the cards on the copy machine but it would waste most of the tag board and I don't want to do that.  So, I bought MOON CARDS at Papers Plus and am making my own.  These cards are great.  They are playing card size and have rounded corners and can be shuffled like a real deck of cards.  I have been using them for years but Papers Plus is the only place I can find them.

Right now I am writing 344 High Frequency words on cards of Cherry Color.  I am sort of getting sick of this and I should have done this 2 weeks ago when I brought them home but NOOOOooooo I had to be lazy.  Now I am paying.

Oh, well,  at least it is keeping me busy.

I am beginning my seventh year in my current school.  I have changed classrooms six times (and yes, we have two floors and no, we don't have an elevator).  Yesterday I had four wonderful students meet me at school and help me move all my stuff downstairs to my new room.  I have bad feet but we had to go barefoot because of the new floorwax.  I have tennis elbow in both arms but I had no big strong people to move the heavy stuff.  I have a bad back but we had to move LOTS of furniture around.  Last night I was so sore I couldn't get to sleep.  Wish my principal and asst. principal would watch a video of us doing all this.  Maybe they wouldn't be so quick to rearrange us.

It seems like teachers are always expected to move their own stuff.  I agree with Mr. P that some videos of teachers moving might let principals know how tough it is.   I guess it's like a boot camp exercise program for teachers!

I love your card idea, Mystery Teacher, and I am going to see if there is a Papers Plus near me.

We generally stay in the same room, but this summer we had to take everything down so the walls could be washed. Also, all the furniture gets moved to one side of the room for carpet cleaning, so it all has to be rearranged. It's not the worst thing. We used to be year-round and had to pack up and move every none weeks. Now THAT was bad!!
