Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

Out of meds...

As my frustration level reaches an all time high for the year, I find out that one of my naughtiest students is out of meds. I should have known. He has been out of control for a while. It has gradually gotten worse and worse.

How did I find out? They tossed his butt out of the after-school program because of his behavior. They called Dad to come and get him and Dad argued that it wasn't the child's fault because he was out of meds and had no insurance.  The after-school program said it was too bad but this was his 5th infraction, not his 3rd like the other kids who get booted.  They gave allowances but enough was enough.  Take him home.

I don't know what Dad is going to do now.  He works until 6:00 in the evening. Or later.  That means this child who can't control himself, think rationally or keep out of trouble will be at home, untended, until dad gets off work.  With this kid, anything can and probably will happen.

Why is it that we, as teachers, get cut down all the time and yet, we are the ones who suffer through the students problems with them?  Why are we the bad guys?
